Skyscanner: How I Got a Europe to US Flight for $400!

This was around 2009, my roommate and I were looking for a place to go on vacation. Don’t know why, but the name Costa Rica came to my mind and I said, “Let’s go to Costa Rica!” Then we looked at the Skyscanner map and confirmed that we would go there because it’s nearby. Somehow the stars aligned and we got direct return flights to Liberia, Costa Rica for only $199.

Now, the stars don’t always align and I don’t always have such ‘lightbulb moments’. Sometimes you have less time and you want to make the most of the moment, but you don’t know how to get the best out of your budget and time, right?

Randomly choosing by throwing darts on a map is good for people with good hand-eye coordination. I don’t, so my house walls end up with a lot of holes!

That’s why, using a searchable map that shows me many options based on my broad dates, that’s my method.

For example, let me tell you about a flight I recently saw using Skyscanner inspire map tool, which gives me many options, some of which I’ve never even heard of before.

There are other tools in the market, but I like Skyscanner’s the best because it also takes layovers into account and shows flights accordingly.

Planning to Escape the Cold

Planning Skyscanner

First I searched for February because I didn’t want to go in winter and was also flexible with dates. So this is what I found:

Tamuning, and I thought, I don’t know this place, but maybe I should?

Wow, this is in Guam. Guam is actually a US territory. I didn’t even know this, this is why Americans have this reputation that we don’t know anything about geography.

After a little searching, I found out that this was just a deal for a short trip, and I wanted something for a longer journey. After much thought, I felt that maybe I could be in Berlin at that time, and then started searching from there.

Mind-Boggling Flight from Berlin to US

 Flight from Berlin to US

Then a flight from Berlin back to the US showed up, which was a mind-boggling $377! I had never paid so little for an RT flight between the US and Europe.

This really could have been a steal!

I clicked on Los Angeles and then I got a weeklong trip, which was perfect for going home quickly and reminding friends and family that I’m still alive and well.

I clicked the green button and on the next page, the tool showed many options around $400 on Norwegian Airlines:

Found My Perfect Flight!

My Perfect Flight

A $434 roundtrip flight from Berlin to Los Angeles. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a flight so cheap and maybe never will again. To be honest, I couldn’t believe it and I was very happy too.

After scrolling down a bit, I found another suitable flight for me on American Airlines — an airline with which I have mileage credits — for only $60 more. Perfect!

Using this tool, I saved hours of time that would have been spent changing dates, going to different websites to search, and dealing with price changes. That’s why I really like these maps – they let me search in a lazy way.

So get ready, everyone, I’m coming home to see you all in February!
